Alcides’ bio: Alcides Rodriguez joined the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as bass clarinetist in the fall of 2005. He received his degrees in music from Baylor and Northwestern Universities, studying with Richard Shanley, Russell Dagon, and J. Lawrie Bloom, as well as chamber music with Larry Combs. He began his musical training in the Youth Symphony Orchestra of his hometown, Guanare, Venezuela, and continued at the National Conservatory of Music of Venezuela with professors Valdemar RodrĂ­guez and Luis Rossi. While in Venezuela, he also studied with distinguished Venezuelan clarinetists such as Jorge Montilla, Daniel Granados, and Carlos Mujica, as well as participating in master classes with such distinguished artists as Walter Boeykens, Paul Meyer, and Eddy Vanoosthuyse. Mr. Rodriguez has won honors in the clarinet competition “Ciudad de dos Hermanas” in Seville, Spain, the concerto competition of the American Youth Symphony Orchestra of Puerto Rico,the Young Texas Artist Music Competition, the Baylor University Concerto Competition, the Orchestral Excerpts Competition of the International Clarinet Association, and the Northwestern University Concerto Competition, among others. In 1997 he gave the first performance in Venezuela of Carl Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto. He has participated in various summer music festivals, including the National Repertory Orchestra and the National Orchestral Institute, both in the United States, and the Pacific Music Festival in Japan. Before coming to the United States, Mr. Rodriguez was principal clarinetist with Los Llanos Symphony Orchestra. He has given solo performances in Venezuela with that orchestra as well as the Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho Symphony Orchestra, Guarico State Symphony Orchestra, and Falcon State Symphony Orchestra, and in the United States with the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra, Baylor University Symphony Orchestra, and American Wind Symphony.
